MIDDLETOWN, R.I. - The Simmons College women's lacrosse team was unable to withstand a second half scoring binge by host Salve Regina University this evening in a 22-12 loss on the road at Gaudet Field in Middletown, R.I. The Sharks fall to 3-5 on the season, while the Seahawks win their fourth straight match to improve to 5-1.

Salve Regina peppered Simmons with 45 shots on the night, while the Sharks made the most of 16 shots, scoring on 75% of their attempts.

Junior attacker Kasey Fries (Bridgewater, Mass.) scored on all four shots she took for Simmons, while sophomore midfielder Elena Bragg (Belmont, Mass.) netted three goals to go with a pair of draw controls, a ground ball and a caused turnover. Sophomore midfielder Ana Giarrusso (Hingham, Mass.) scored two goals to go with seven draw controls, while sophomore defender Mallory Cottam (Hope, R.I.) found the back of the net twice for her second straight multi-goal effort and added three draw controls. Sophomore goalie Kenzie Rogers (Bourne, Mass.) stopped seven of 26 shots in 46:16 of action for the Sharks, before junior goalie Chyenne Yeager (Indiana, Pa.) turned back one of four shots on net.

First year attacker Maddie Villareal (Portsmouth, R.I.) led all players with nine points on seven goals and two assists for the Seahawks. Junior middie Katie Kline (Brookfield, Conn.) added six goals, seven draw controls, a ground ball and a caused turnover. First year attacker Stefani Salisbury (Cranston, R.I.) contributed with three goals and a ground ball. First year goalie Bridget Newbury (Bridgewater, Mass.) stopped three shots for Salve Regina.

The teams were tied at 9-9 at halftime, before the home team outscored Simmons, 13-3 in the second stanza. The Seahawks scored four times in just under a four-minute span early in the second half as part of a 10-1 burst to begin the new period and give the Seahawks a 19-10 lead with 13:44 to go in the match. Villareal notched the first two goals of the half, before sophomore midfielder Lindsey Smith (North Attleboro, Mass.), Kline and Salisbury each scored a pair of goals during the stretch for Salve Regina.

Giarrusso scored a player advantage goal at the 12:57 mark of the second half to cut the deficit to 19-11, but the Sharks were unable to get closer than an eight-goal deficit the rest of the way.

Bragg scored the first goal of the night just 38 seconds into the match for Simmons. The teams traded goals through the contest's first 10 goals to set up a 5-5 tie with 18:05 showing in the first half. Senior attacker Kaitlin Gillespie (Haddam, Conn.) and Salisbury each scored to give the Seahawks their largest lead of the half at 7-5 with 14:10 to go in th period. The teams continued the trend of scoring two goals at a time with Fries and Giarrusso each recording markers within 20 seconds of another to pull them even at 7-7 with 10:28 to play in the half. Villareal and Gillespie each scored to give Salve Regina a 9-7 margin, before first year attacker Kingsley Richards (Lexington, Mass.) and Fries each countered for the Sharks with free position goals to knot the match at 9-9 at the intermission.

Simmons returns to action on Saturday, April 1 when it hosts Great Northeast Athletic Conference foe Lasell College for an 11:00 a.m. match, while the Seahawks head to Providence, R.I. on March 30 to take on Johnson & Wales University at 7:00 p.m.
