Lacrosse Falls in Season Opener at Smith, 13-5

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - The Simmons College women's lacrosse team fell to host Smith College, 13-5, this afternoon at Smith Turf Field in Northampton, Mass. The Sharks fall to 0-1 in their season opener, while the Lyons improve to 1-1.

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - The Simmons College women's lacrosse team fell to host Smith College, 13-5, this afternoon at Smith Turf Field in Northampton, Mass. The Sharks fall to 0-1 in their season opener, while the Lyons improve to 1-1.

Sophomore attacker Missie Maiewski (Northampton, Mass.) led Simmons with a pair of goals and added two ground balls, while junior attacker Kasey Fries (Bridgewater, Mass.) tallied a goal in addition to an assist. Sophomore Lauren Williams (Bowdoinham, Maine) led the defense with five caused turnovers to go with three ground balls. Junior goalie Chyenne Yeager (Indiana, Pa.) made 14 saves for the Sharks. 

First year midfielder Sydney Garner (Beaverton, Ore.) led Smith with a game-high four goals and added two caused turnovers and a ground ball. Sophomore midfielder Chloe Harris (Alexandria, Va.) registered three points with two goals and an assist in addition to five ground balls and a caused turnover, while junior Caroline Myran (Philadelphia, Pa.) added two goals an assist and a caused turnover. Junior Sarah Price (Hudson, Ohio) stopped nine shots.

Simmons cracked the scoring column first when first year attacker Kate Bowers (Belchertown, Mass.) found the back of the net for her first collegiate goal with 23:50 left in the opening half. The Lyons closed out the half with three unanswered goals, including a player-down score from Garner to take a 3-1 margin into halftime.

Harris and Maiewski traded goals to open the second stanza, before Smith tallied three straight scores to take an 8-2 cushion with 17:54 left in the game. Maiewski notched her second goal of the day, followed by sophomore defender Mallory Cottam's (Hope, R.I.) first goal of the year to pull the Sharks to within 8-4. Garner countered for the Lyons, before Fries matched her with Simmons' final goal of the match to make it 9-5. Smith netted the final four scores of the contest, including a pair from Myran to set the final at 13-5.

The Sharks return to action on Tuesday, March 7 when they host New England College in their home opener on Daly Field in Brighton, Mass., while Smith concludes a three-game homestand with an 7:00 p.m. match with Western Connecticut State University on March 8.
