Lacrosse Routs Saint Joseph (Conn.), 18-3

BOSTON, Mass. ? Junior midfielder Greer Gilbert (Falmouth, Mass.) matched a career high with nine points and first year middie Kasey Fries (Bridgewater, Mass.) netted a career-best matching four goals to lead the Simmons College women?s lacrosse team over University of Saint Joseph (Conn.), 18-3, this afternoon in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference contest at Winsor Field in Boston, Mass.

BOSTON, Mass. – Junior midfielder Greer Gilbert (Falmouth, Mass.) matched a career high with nine points and first year middie Kasey Fries (Bridgewater, Mass.) netted a career-best matching four goals to lead the Simmons College women's lacrosse team over University of Saint Joseph (Conn.), 18-3, this afternoon in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference contest at Winsor Field in Boston, Mass. The Sharks improve to 5-7 overall and 3-4 in league play, while the Blue Jays fall to 3-6 and 1-6. 

Simmons owned a 35-12 shot advantage and dominated the draws by a count of 16-7. The Sharks controlled the first half, taking a commanding 13-1 lead by the intermission. 

Six different players scored the first six markers of the afternoon to give Simmons a 6-0 advantage with single goals from senior attacker Stephanie Oliveri (Waltham, Mass.), junior midfielder Greer Gilbert (Falmouth, Mass.), junior middie Alexia Malone Oliver (Bristol, R.I.), first year attacker Jolene Potter (Readfield, Maine), junior midfielder Ashley Sheehan (North Attleboro, Mass.) and junior attacker Alexa Faria (Cumberland, R.I.). Potter's goal was the first collegiate score of her career. 

Senior attacker Dayna Gambino (Newington, Conn.) put St. Joseph on the board when she found the back of the net off a feed from first year attacker Hannah Lemek (Bristol, Conn.) with 14:30 left in the first half. 

The Sharks closed out the half with seven unanswered goals, including two from Gilbert and one each from Sheehan, Fries, Malone Oliver, senior midfielder Ali Stonehouse (Dublin, N.H.) and sophomore midfielder Sara Rademacher (North Haven, Conn.)

The Blue Jays tallied the first score of the second half when senior attacker Rachel Foster (Newington, Conn.) scored at the 26:16 mark to cut the deficit to 13-2. Simmons responded with four straight goals, including three from Fries and one from senior defender Symonne Fontenot (Portsmouth, N.H.) to extend the Sharks' cushion to 17-2. Foster traded goals with Simmons first year attacker Kiera Kirkaldy (Middlebury, Vt.) to wrap up the day's scoring and set the final at 18-3. 

Gilbert finished with a career-high six assists to go with three goals to give her a career-high 62 points on the season. She also added six draw controls, two ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers for the Sharks. Sheehan and Malone Oliver each netted a pair of goals in addition to five draw controls, three ground balls and a caused turnover for Sheehan and two ground balls, a pair of winning draws and a caused turnover for Malone Oliver. Potter, Oliveri and Fontenot each added an assist to their respective goals as well. First year defender Gabrielle Klane (Franlin, Mass.) picked up a career-best five ground balls, caused a turnover and won a draw. 

Foster led Saint Joseph with a pair of goals, five draw controls and a match-high five caused turnovers, while Gambino also picked up three ground balls and caused a turnover to go with her marker.

Senior goalie Crystal Derosier (Kingston, Mass.) made six saves for Simmons to earn the victory, while first year netminder Emily Bourassa (Bristol, Conn.) stopped nine shots for the visitors. 

The Sharks return to action on Wednesday, April 15 when they travel to Northfield, Vt. to take on GNAC rival Norwich University at 3:00 p.m., while the Blue Jays head to Nashua, N.H. to play Daniel Webster College at 4:00 p.m. on April 13.
