Sharks Blow Past Wildcats, 17-10

BOSTON, Mass. -- Greer Gilbert (Falmouth, Mass.) scored six goals and added two assists to lead the Simmons College Sharks past the visiting Johnson & Wales Wildcats, 17-10 Saturday afternoon in Great Northeast Athletic Conference action. The Sharks move to 5-5 overall and 4-3 in the conference, while the Wildcats fall to .500 at 7-7, 4-4 GNAC.

BOSTON, Mass. -- Three Sharks received 2014 Great Northeast Athletic Conference Lacrosse All-Conference Honors announced Monday by the Conference.

BOSTON, Mass. -- Greer Gilbert (Falmouth, Mass.) scored six goals and added two assists to lead the Simmons College Sharks past the visiting Johnson & Wales Wildcats, 17-10 Saturday afternoon in Great Northeast Athletic Conference action. The Sharks move to 5-5 overall and 4-3 in the conference, while the Wildcats fall to .500 at 7-7, 4-4 GNAC.

 

Johnson & Wales struck first just 23 seconds into the first half as Kayla Smith fed Jessica Schmell from behind the net for the goal. Simmons responded with seven unanswered goals to take a commanding lead. Stephanie Oliveri (Waltham, Mass.) added her 28th goal of the year, Ashley Sheehan (North Attleboro, Mass.) struck on a free position shot and Gilbert scored her first of three in the half. Sophomore Alexia Malone Oliver (Bristol, R.I.) added her 14th of the year off a pass from Gilbert and Alexa Faria (Cumberland, R.I.) score the Sharks seventh goal off an assist from Oliveri with 13 minutes to play.

 

Kayla Smith beat Sharks goalkeeper Crystal Derosier (Kingston, Mass.) up high for the Wildcats second goal but Sheehan collected a pass from Gilbert at the top of the eight and drilled a shot past Johnson & Wales netminder Genevieve Giampietro for the 8-2 lead at halftime.

 

The Wildcats began to chip away in the second as Cassie Collins, Lydia Knapp and Smith found the back of the Sharks net. Simmons first year Sara Rademacher (North Haven, Conn.) scored twice for the Sharks and Becca Shea (Quincy, Mass.) and Oliveri combined for the Sharks 11th goal. Johnson & Wales cut the Sharks lead to four with 12 minutes to play when Anna Oshiro score on a free position shot but Simmons scored four straight goals to secure the victory, 17-10.

 

Derosier made eight saves for her fifth win of the year, while Giampietro made 10 saves in the loss. The Sharks return to action on Sunday at the University of Saint Joseph at 12:00 PM.
