Celebrating Women's History Month with Rowing's Samantha Merrow

Throughout Women's History Month, the Simmons Student-Athlete Advisory Committee will reflect on the importance of celebrating Women's History Month and the inspirations in their life. Today we feature Simmons rowing junior Samantha Merrow on the inspirations in her life and the importance of Women's History Month.

1. Who throughout women's history has been inspirational to you and your life?
An inspiration to me has been my mom. Her perseverance has taught me to work hard and never give up, regardless of life obstacles. She also showed me the importance of humor and empathy, especially as a leader.

2. What does women's history month mean to you?
Women's history month is a time for reflection and empowerment. Reflecting on past struggles serves as a reminder for how far women's rights have come and how much more there is to go.

3. How do you celebrate and show the importance of women's history within your team?
Our team shows the importance of women's history by being inclusive and empowering towards other young women. We are taught to be strong and independent on and off the water.

4. How will you transition from learning from the inspirational women you mentioned in question one to being that inspirational woman/leader in your future?
I hope to practice similar behaviors she has shown me. I know that my future goals, whether they be academic or athletic, are feasible with determination.
