Crew Places Fourth at Seven Sisters Championship Regatta

BOSTON, Mass. -- The Simmons University crew team finished fourth overall at the Seven Sisters Championship Regatta, hosted by Wellesley College this morning on the Charles River in Boston.

The Sharks totaled 17 points on the day, while Wellesley College won their 10th straight championship with 27 points, edging Smith College out by two points.

Simmons placed third in the Varsity Eight race with a time of 14:54.9 on the two and a quarter mile course to finish less than a second ahead of Mount Holyoke College. First year Maggie O'Byrne (Boston, Mass.) set the pace from the stroke seat for Simmons, followed by sophomore Samantha Kelsey (Salt Lake City, Utah), senior Peizhu Pam Qian (Beijing, China/Developing Virtue Secondary Girls School (Calif.)), sophomore Steffi Gaehde (Brookline, Mass.), junior Sabrina Belozerova (Newton, Mass.), senior Eleanor Pullan (Northampton, Mass.), junior Hannah Dike (Leominster, Mass.) and senior bow Nicole Lee (North  Reading, Mass.) with senior Melissa Morton (Somerville, Mass.) handling the coxswain duties for the eight.

The Sharks' Second Varsity Eight placed fifth in its race, placing one-tenth of a second behind Smith College with at time of 16:15.0. Senior Christine Yu (Plainville, Mass.) pulled from the stroke seat for Simmons with first year Kat Jones (Methuen, Mass.) in the seventh seat followed by sophomore April Miller (Newton, N.H.), first years Kathryn Armour (Shrewsbury, Mass.) and Chloe Janes (Brookline, Mass.), junior Lily Pennington (Waterton, Mass.), first year Mackenzie Gondek (Waban, Mass.) and junior bow Chloe Feuerstein (Winchester, Mass.) along with junior coxswain Ally Fecteau (Burlington, Conn.) directing the squad. 

Simmons also placed fifth in the Novice Eight race with a time of 17:27.8. The shell was comprised of first year stroke Emily Niemi (Valencia, Calif.), followed by first years Amy Grace Thissell (Hamilton, Mass.)Michaela Hayes (Concord, N.H.)Lexi Witherell (Harpswell, Maine)Anna Boyles (Ridgeland, Miss.), Maralee Mitchell (Sterling, Mass.)Maya Wyse (Singapore) and first year bow Jen-Li Barry (Santa Barbera, Calif.). First year Audrey Pappadia (Woodstock, Md.) directed the crew from the coxswain seat.

This year's regatta also included an exhibition alumni race of one and a quarter miles. The Sharks alumni finished second with a time of 9:02.1. Chelsea Foster, Sophie Stone, Whitney Crane, Eva Webber, Ronnie Bennett, Melissa, Alexa Frongillo and Elsbeth Colson rowed for Simmons.
