Crew Competes at Quinsigamond Snake Regatta

WORCESTER, Mass. -- The Simmons University crew team earned top-eight finishes in both the Varsity Eight and Novice Eight races at the 2018 Quinsigamond Snake Regatta this morning on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Mass.

The Sharks varsity eight placed seventh with a time of 16:27.042 on the two-kilometer course, finishing ahead of Assumption College and Clark University. Worcester Polytechnic Institute won the race with a mark of 15:04.183. First year Maggie O'Byrne (Boston, Mass.) paced Simmons from the stroke seat, followed by sophomore Samantha Kelsey (Salt Lake City, Utah), junior Peizhu Pam Qian (Beijing, China/Developing Virtue Secondary Girls School (Calif.)), sophomore Steffi Gaehde (Brookline, Mass.) in the five seat, junior Sabrina Belozerova (Newton, Mass.), senior Eleanor Pullan (Northampton, Mass.), junior Chloe Feuerstein (Winchester, Mass.) and senior bow Christine Yu (Plainville, Mass.) with senior coxswain Melissa Morton (Somers, Conn.) directing the shell.

The Sharks placed eighth in the novice eight event with the 'A' squad turning in a time of 19:20.03 to surpass the top novice squads from Middlebury College and The College of Holy Cross. Massachusetts Institute of Technology finished first with a time of 16:31.245.

First year coxswain Audrey Pappadia (Woodstock, Md.) guided the Simmons eight with first year stroke Anna Boyles (Ridgeland, Miss.) pulling ahead of classmates Emily Niemi (Valencia, Calif.)Michaela Hayes (Concord, N.H.), sophomore April Miller (Newton, N.H.), first years Lexi Witherell (Harpswell, Maine)Amy Grace Thissell (Hamilton, Mass.)Jen-Li Barry (Santa Barbara, Calif.) and first year bow Mackenzie Gondek (Waban, Mass.).

The Simmons 'B' novice eight finished 14th with a time of 20:58.928 behind the shell of senior Nicole Lee (North Reading, Mass.) taking a turn on the coxswain perch ahead of first year stroke Kat Jones (Methuen, Mass.), followed by first years Catherine Bernard (Amesbury, Mass.)Maya Wyse (Singapore)Maralee Mitchell (Sterling, Mass.)Taylor Barnes (Underhill, Vt.)Ruby Weldon (Plymouth, N.H.)Lily Sherburne (Boothbay, Maine) and first year bow Kathryn Armour (Shrewsbury, Mass.).

The Sharks will row again on Sunday, October 21 when they compete at the historic 54th Head of the Charles Regatta.
