Crew's First and Second Varsity Eights Both Place Third at Donahue Cup

WORCESTER, Mass. -- The Simmons College crew team's first and second varsity eights both placed third in their respective races this morning at the Barbara Donahue Cup on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Mass.

WORCESTER, Mass. -- The Simmons College crew team's first and second varsity eights both placed third in their respective races this morning at the Barbara Donahue Cup on Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, Mass.

The Sharks placed third in both races behind Williams College and Worcester Polytechnic Institute.

The One Varsity Eight turned in a time of 7:12.92 to finish ahead of University of Rochester by almost five seconds and Connecticut College. Williams won the 2000 meter race with a time of 6:43.40 to edge out WPI's finish of 6:47.1.

Simmons was directed by junior coxswain Melissa Morton (Somers, Conn.) with Eleanor Thidemann (Belmont, Mass.) taking over the stroke seat duties, followed by first year Samantha Kelsey (Salt Lake City, Utah), senior Ronnie Bennett (Pottstown, Pa.), sophomores Sabrina Belozerova (Newton, Mass.), Peizhu Pam Qian (Beijing, China)Emily Saunders (Hebron, Conn.)Hannah Dike (Leominster, Mass.) and first year bow Caroline Granitur (Vero Beach, Fla.).

 
The Sharks' Second Varsity Eight clocked in at 7:32.45 to cross the finish nearly 14 seconds ahead of Connecticut College, while the Williams shell placed first at 6:58.80. The Simmons crew featured senior Clarice Johnson (Norwell, Mass.) in the coxswain perch ahead of senior stroke Elsbeth Colson (Everett, Mass.), junior Madison Summers (Hudson, N.H.), first year Steffi Gaehde (Brookline, Mass.), junior Christine Yu (Plainville, Mass.), sophomores Lily Pennington, Mass.), Rebecca Ramsey (Jefferson, Mass.), junior Nicole Lee (North Reading, Mass.) and sophomore bow Chloe Feuerstein (Winchester, Mass.)
 
 
Simmons will be back on Lake Quinsigamond tomorrow morning when it battles Clark University, Endicott College, Mount Holyoke College and University of Vermont at 10:00 a.m.
