Sharks Take 3rd at 2013 Seven Sisters Regatta

CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa. ? The 2013 Seven Sisters Championship Regatta hosted by Bryn Mawr College was held Sunday morning the Hines Rowing Center on the Schuylkill River.

CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa. – The 2013 Seven Sisters Championship Regatta hosted by Bryn Mawr College was held Sunday morning the Hines Rowing Center on the Schuylkill River. The Wellesley College Blue took home their fifth straight team championship. Mount Holyoke College finished second followed by Simmons College, Smith College and Bryn Mawr College.

In the first race of the day, the Varsity 8 crew from Smith took home the top spot led by the All-Seven Sisters duo of Riana Hull and Helen Smith. The Pioneers time of 17.28 was four seconds faster than the second place boat of Wellesley who finished the 4K course in 17.32. Simmons claimed third place with a time of 17.42 while Mount Holyoke finished in fourth one second behind the Sharks with a 17.43. The host, Bryn Mawr, finished the race with a 18.43 for fifth place.

In the 2nd Varsity race, Wellesley "A" took home first place honors with a time of 18.00. Simmons "A" (18.09) and Mount Holyoke "A" (18.46) finished 2-3 while Smith claimed fourth with a 18.55. Wellesley "B", Mount Holyoke "B" and Simmons "B" rounded out the second varsity finishers.

In the 1st Novice race, Brianna Chace led the Mount Holyoke Lyons to a first-place finish with a time of 17.59. Wellesley took home second (18.09) while Simmons (18.34) claimed third place.  Smith College finished fourth with a time of 20.31 while Bryn Mawr finished 5th with a 24.14.

In the final race of the day, the 2nd Novice, Mount Holyoke College bested Simmons by nearly a minute to take home 8 team points. Wellesley finished third in the race with a time of 21.04.

Today marked the first time that Bryn Mawr has hosted the Seven Sisters Regatta in their new home, the Hines Rowing Center. However, with the conclusion of the Regatta, Mount Holyoke's head coach, Jeanne Friedman, coached her Lyons for the final time in the annual fall race. Jeanne's former coach from the Philadelphia Girls' Rowing Club was in attendance and spoke as all five school's honored Jeanne.

The first Seven Sisters Championship Regatta was held in 1986. Since then, the annual race has been held every year except for in 2000, 2006 and 2007 due to inclement weather.  Mount Holyoke has won nine team championships while Smith and Wellesley have won five each.
