Brasa Leads Basketball in 60-47 loss to Emerson

BOSTON, Mass. ? Senior forward Liz Brasa (East Hartford, Conn.) matched her career high with 20 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead the Simmons College women?s basketball team over visiting University of Saint Joseph (Conn.), 66-53, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference game this evening at Moore Gymnasium in Boston, Mass. The Sharks improve to 8-14 overall for their highest win total since they finished 9-14 in 2010-11 and improve their conference mark to 6-9. The Blue Jays fall to 9-15 and 3-12.

Emerson held Simmons to just 28.6% (16-56) shooting from the floor. 

Junior forward Liz Brasa (East Hartford, Conn.) topped the Sharks with nine points to go with five rebounds, two steals and a pair of assists, while junior guard Jamie Zoldy (Watertown, Conn.) netted seven points, grabbed four rebounds and dished out two assists. 

First year forward Charlie Boyle (Scotts Valley, Calif.) was 6-7 from the floor for the visitors and added two assists and a rebound, while first year guard Natalie Busch (Weybridge, England) chipped in with 10 points, three boards, a pair of assists and a steal off the bench. Sophomore forward Sierra Ducey (Poway, Calif.) pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds and added four points, six assists and two steals. 

The Lions scored nine of the first 11 points of the game, capped by a three-pointer from junior guard Elizabeth Horan (Ashland, Mass.), to give the visitors a 9-2 lead with 6:37 to go in the first quarter. First year guard Rebekah Carroll (Londonderry, N.H.) later drilled a three-pointer to pull the Sharks to within 11-9 at the 4:52 mark of the period, but seven unanswered points, capped by a trifecta from junior forward Olivia Still (Hebron, Conn.) gave the visitors an 18-9 cushion with 2:21 to go in the period. Emerson took a 24-13 advantage into the second quarter. 

First year forward Elena Bragg (Belmont, Mass.) knocked down the second of two free throws for her first career point to cut the deficit to 26-18 for Simmons with 6:02 to play in the first half. The Lions scored seven straight points to take their largest lead of the game at 33-18 with 4:34 showing in the second quarter and took a 35-21 lead into the intermission. 

Emerson later maintained a 42-30 lead, following a jumper from Still with 2:26 remaining in the third quarter. The Sharks tallied six unanswered points to cut the margin to 42-36 with 53 seconds left in the period and headed to the fourth quarter, trailing 44-38. 

First year guard Francesca Corsinetti (Johnston, R.I.) later knocked down a jump shot for Simmons to pull it to within 44-40 with 8:16 to play in the contest. It would be as close as the Sharks would get the rest of the way as the Lions scored seven straight points as part of a 12-2 stretch, fueled by nine points from Boyle, to take 56-42 advantage with 2:39 to play in the contest. Emerson held off Simmons for the remainder of the game to come away with the victory. 

The Sharks return to action on Saturday, February 6 when they travel to Paxton, Mass. to take on Great Northeast Athletic Conference foe Anna Maria College for a 1:00 p.m. tip-off, while the Lions visit Fisher College on February 4 for a 7:00 p.m. match-up.
