Softball Edged by Thiel, 2-1

KISSIMMEE, Fla. ? The Simmons College softball team was edged by Thiel College, 2-1, this afternoon at the Citrus Games in Kissimmee, Fla. at Disney?s Wide World of Sports Complex. The Tomcats improve to 1-1 on the season, while the Sharks fall to 0-2.

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – First year pitcher Mackenzie Gullette (Dunlap, Ill.) allowed just one unearned run in her collegiate debut to lead the Thiel College softball team to a 2-1 victory over Simmons College this afternoon at the Citrus Games in Kissimmee, Fla. at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex. The Tomcats improve to 1-1 on the season, while the Sharks fall to 0-2. 

Sophomore third baseman Alexandra Moleski (Bridgeport, Conn.) led Simmons, going 2-3 with a run scored. 

Sophomore starting pitcher Tori Gomes (Taunton, Mass.) (0-1) suffered the loss for the Sharks, yielding two runs on five hits and three walks, while setting down two batters on strikes. 

Sophomore first baseman Jessica Kelley (Sarver, Pa.) and sophomore Madison Fullmer (Elyria, Ohio) each went 1-3 with a run batted in to lead Thiel. Kelley also smacked a double and scored a run. 

First year pitcher Mackenzie Gullette (Dunlap, Ill.) allowed just one unearned run in her collegiate debut and hurled all seven innings for the Tomcats, allowing six hits and no walks, while fanning a pair of batters to improve to 1-0. 

Thiel got all the scoring it would need with a pair of runs in the fourth. Sophomore shortstop Miranda Reesman (Vandergrift, Pa.) drew a one-out walk and came around to score the game's first run when Kelley roped a double down the left field line with two outs. Kelley later made it 2-0 on a Fullmer single to center field. 

Simmons got a run back in the bottom of the sixth when Moleski reached on an error to lead off the frame and advanced to second on the throw, went to third on a ground out and scored on wild pitch to cut the deficit in half. Gullette set down the Sharks in order to close out the seventh and earn the win. 

Simmons returns to action tomorrow when it takes on Emerson College in an 11:00 a.m. twinbill, while the Tomcats play second-ranked Saint John Fisher College at 1:15 p.m.
