Field Hockey Ties NCAA Record with 19-0 Win over Albertus Magnus

NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- Sophomore midfielder Liz Poteat (Westfield, Mass.) and first year midfielder Emily Plummer (San Diego, Calif.) each matched the Simmons University field hockey record with five goals apiece, while the team tied the NCAA Division III record for goals in a game in a 19-0 victory over host Albertus Magnus College this afternoon at Celatano Field in New Haven, Conn. The Sharks improve to 2-3 on the season, while the Falcons fall to 0-2.

NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- Sophomore midfielder Liz Poteat (Westfield, Mass.) and first year midfielder Emily Plummer (San Diego, Calif.) each matched the Simmons University field hockey record with five goals apiece, while the team tied the NCAA Division III record for goals in a game in a 19-0 victory over host Albertus Magnus College this afternoon at Celatano Field in New Haven, Conn. The Sharks improve to 2-3 on the season, while the Falcons fall to 0-2.

Simmons matched the former mark for goals in a game set by Eastern Mennonite University vs. Virginia Wesleyan University in 1992 and Eastern Mennonite vs. Hollins University in 1996. Simmons dominated play with a 44-1 shot advantage and owned a 13-1 penalty corner margin.

The Sharks tallied 13 of their school-record 19 markers in the opening half, including eight in the first 18:06 of play. The school's former high goal total came in a 9-0 victory over Wheelock College on September 9, 2015. 

Poteat and Plummer each matched the school-record for individual goals in a game, which was set last season by Sammy Rondeau (2014-17) last season vs. Wheelock College on September 13. Sophomore forward Lily D'Anna (Woodstock, Vt.) was the third Simmons player to notch a hat trick this afternoon and the fourth Shark to register multiple goals. Senior forward Ana Giarrusso (Hingham, Mass.) racked up a career-high six points with two goals and two assists for Simmons. 

Junior defender Meg Pereira (New Bedford, Mass.), sophomore midfielder Maggie Fuzak (Buffalo, N.Y.) and first year defender Brianna Desharnais (Freedom, N.H.) each potted their first respective collegiate goals with Pereira and Desharnais also adding an assist each for the Sharks. Junior midfielder Olivia Trull (Lowell, Mass.) contributed with a goal and an assist and senior defender Adrianna Fournier (Newport, Vt.) collected her first collegiate point with an assist, while first year midfielder Lilly Devitt (Belmont, Mass.) picked up the first two assists of her career.

Junior Morgan Shura (Wallingford, Conn.) attempted the lone shot for Albertus Magnus.

Three goalies combined on the shutout for Simmons. Sophomore Lucy McNamara (Brewster, Mass.) earned the victory and did not face a shot in the opening 28:52 of play, before junior Danielle Francis (Oxford, Mass.) stopped the only shot she saw in the final 6:08 of the half. Sophomore McKinley Croteau (Keene, N.H.) did not face a shot in the final 35 minutes of action in the second half. First year keeper Kasey Herrera (Stratford, Conn.) made 16 saves for the Falcons in addition to a defensive save each from sophomore defender Rochelle Furino (North Haven, Conn.), junior defender Victoria Torres (West Haven, Conn.) and junior defender Monica Colon (Newark, N.J.).

The Sharks return to action on Saturday, September 15 when they host Great Northeast Athletic Conference rival Lasell College on Daly Field at 11:00 a.m., while Albertus Mangus hosts Dean College on September 14 at 4:00 p.m.
