Field Hockey Nipped at WPI, 1-0

WORCESTER, Mass. - The Simmons College field hockey team was defeated 1-0 this evening by host Worcester Polytechnic Institute at Alumni Stadium in Worcester, Mass. The Sharks fall to 1-2 on the season, while the Engineers improve to 1-1.

WORCESTER, Mass. - The Simmons College field hockey team was defeated 1-0 this evening by host Worcester Polytechnic Institute at Alumni Stadium in Worcester, Mass. The Sharks fall to 1-2 on the season, while the Engineers improve to 1-1.

Despite being outshot, 10-1, in the opening half, the Simmons defense did not allow a score. WPI scored the lone marker of the match with 13:20 left in the second stanza and owned a 9-1 advantage on penalty corners for the match.

Senior forward Izzy Garver (Owls Head, Maine) scored the game-winner for the Engineers when she corralled a rebound and deposited a shot into the back left corner of the cage at the 56:40 mark.

Senior forward Sammy Rondeau (Franklin, Mass.) enjoyed a pair of scoring opportunities in a four-second span within the first three minutes of the second half for the Sharks, but the WPI keeper turned away both shots.

First year goalie Lucy McNamara (Brewster, Mass.) made a season-high 13 saves for Simmons, while first year defender Abigail Anderson (South Yarmouth, Mass.) registered her fifth defensive save to increase her nation-leading total. Junior Karen Mushrall (Mariaville, Maine) turned away all three shots she faced to earn the victory for the home team.

The Sharks return to action when they open the home slate on Saturday, September 9, facing Great Northeast Athletic Conference foe Mount Ida College at Daly Field for an 11:00 a.m. start. WPI hosts Elms College on the same day at 10:00 a.m.
