STANDISH, Maine - The Simmons College field hockey team was defeated at host Saint Joseph's College, 3-0, this afternoon in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference match at Mercy Field in Standish, Maine. The Sharks fall to 7-5 overall and 3-1 in league play, while the Monks improve to 6-5 and 3-1.

Saint Joseph's was able to keep the ball in the Simmons defensive zone for much of the match with a 13-3 advantage on penalty corners, but the Sharks still managed a 10-6 margin in shots.

First year forward Libby Pomerleau (Limerick, Maine) scored all three goals for the Monks for her first collegiate hat trick.

Saint Joseph's wasted no time in cracking the scoring column when Pomerleau scored unassisted just 61 seconds into the contest for a 1-0 edge. She scored during a scrum in the goalmouth following a penalty corner. The goal held up as the only score of the opening half.

The Monks added another goal at the 47:27 mark when Pomerleau deflected a shot taken by junior Elyse Caiazzo (Scarborough, Maine) for a 2-0 lead. She capped the day's scoring less than four minutes later with her team-high ninth tally off a left-to-right cross from sophomore forward Kara Kelly (York, Maine) with 18:55 left to play in the match.

The Sharks had multiple scoring opportunities off a penalty corner in the 66th minute, when the visitors rattled off four close-range shots in a span of five seconds. St. Joe's sophomore defender Meghan Burke (Falmouth, Mass.) made a defensive save on an attempt by Simmons junior forward Sammy Rondeau (Franklin, Mass.) and second-year keeper Megan Baker (Gorham, Maine) recorded three rapid-fire saves to keep the Sharks off the board.

Baker earned the victory for Saint Joseph's with seven saves. Senior goalie Brianna Rastello (Salem, N.H.) took the loss in the cage for Simmons and sophomore Ana Giarrusso (Hingham, Mass.) recorded a defensive stop for the Sharks.

Seniors Hailey Bruno-Moulton (South Berwick, Maine) and Jenna Gagnon (Waterville, Maine) led the Simmons' offensive effort with three shots apiece.

The Sharks will be in action again when they travel to South Hadley, Mass. on Wednesday, October 12 to take on Mount Holyoke College at 7:00 p.m., while the Monks head to North Dartmouth, Mass. to play University of Massachusetts Dartmouth on October 10 at 1:00 p.m.
