BOSTON, Mass. – First year forward Olivia Trull (Lowell, Mass.) scored a goal and assisted on another to lead the Simmons College field hockey team to a 2-1 victory over visiting Lasell College in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference match this afternoon at Daly Field in Brighton, Mass. The Sharks improve to 6-4 overall, including a perfect 3-0 in league play, while the Lasers fall to 6-5 and 1-3.
Simmons controlled the majority of the match, holding a 10-5 shot advantage and an 8-4 margin on penalty corners.
Trull gave the Sharks a 1-0 edge just 69 seconds into the match when senior forward Jenna Gagnon (Waterville, Maine) fed her with a short cross in the left slot for a shot inside the left post. Simmons added a goal with 5:12 left in the opening half to take a 2-0 lead. Trull sent a lead cross to sophomore forward Missie Maiewski (Northampton, Mass.) who carried the ball into the circle, before unleashing a shot into the back of the cage on the right side.
The Sharks looked poised to register a shutout, but Lasell scored with 6:06 left in the contest. Sophomore forward Cailin Flannery (Medford, N.J.) picked up a rebound shot from first year forward Grace Duguay (Watertown, Mass.) and slipped behind the defense for her eighth goal of the year to cut the deficit in half at 2-1.
Neither team was able to score for the rest of the match, leaving the Sharks with the victory.
Senior goalie Brianna Rastello (Salem, N.H.) stopped two shots to earn the win for Simmons, while junior keeper Denise Landry made a pair of saves for the Lasers.
The Sharks will be in action again on Tuesday, October 4 when they host Colby-Sawyer College at Daly Field for a 7:00 p.m. start, while Lasell hosts New England College on the same day at 4:00 p.m.
