BOSTON, Mass. – First year forward Julie Saltamartini (East Hampstead, N.H.) notched the first two goals of her collegiate career for the Simmons College field hockey team in a 5-3 loss to visiting Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 5-3, this evening on Winsor Field in Boston, Mass. The Sharks fall to 1-2 on the season, while the Engineers improve to 1-0 in their season opener.

Penn and Dethy traded the first two goals of the night within 61 seconds of each other to give MIT a 2-0 lead at 16:25 of the first half. Penn's first collegiate goal came when she collected her own rebound shot and deposited the ball into the right corner. Dethy followed when she took a cross on a penalty corner from junior forward Molly McNamara (Auburn, Mass.) and scored from the top of the left circle. 

Simmons cut the deficit in half at the 29:06 mark when Saltamartini sent a shot that ricocheted off the keeper and into the back of the cage to make it 2-1. The Engineers answered just over three minutes later when Penn notched her second tally on a backhanded shot from 10 yards out on the left side to give the visitors a 3-1 margin. MIT took a 4-1 lead with just 56 ticks left in the opening half when Dethy set up sophomore forward Tate DeWeese (Towson, Md.) in front of the cage for the score. 

The Engineers increased their lead early in the second half thanks to Dethy's second marker that deflected off a defender just 3:55 into the period. Sophomore midfielder Keeley Erhardt (Ann Arbor, Mich.) assisted on the goal. 

The Sharks tallied the final two goals of the evening. Saltamartini lifted a cross in front of the cage that classmate Samantha Rondeau (Franklin, Mass.) redirected in the air with a one-timer into the back of the cage at the 45:53 mark to make it 5-2. Saltamartini pulled the home team to within 5-3 with her second goal of the evening. The forward fired a low hard shot from the top of the circle that thundered off the back of the cage with 1:25 remaining in the contest. 

Junior keeper Evie Kyritsis (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) earned the victory for MIT, stopping nine of 11 shots in 47:50 of action, before classmate Paige Kennedy (Eastchester, N.Y.) played the final 22:10 and turned away one of two shots she faced. Sophomore Brianna Rastello (Salem, N.H.) made 11 saves for Simmons. 

The Sharks will be in action again on Saturday, September 6 when they host Worcester Polytechnic Institute on Winsor Field at 11:00 a.m., while the Engineers host University of Massachusetts Dartmouth to open the home slate at 12:00 p.m. in Cambridge, Mass.
